The Arc, located in Martingale Way, Portishead, Bristol, is a remarkable residential new build development, characterized by a distinctive curved and domed central section. The project brief was to not only ensure thermal efficiency but to create a visually appealing design that seamlessly integrates with the surrounding environment. Because of coastal proximity, it was important to have a robust solution. The project now stands as a testament to the combined efforts of SPS Envirowall and installer Woodman Brothers, offering 26 new flats, including one-, two-, and three-bedroom homes, as well as a penthouse with panoramic views.
Specific Design and Technical Challenges Overcome
The architectural complexity of the building’s curved and domed central section presented a significant technical challenge. Working closely with SPS Envirowall’s technical team, Woodman Brothers created a facade solution which met the client’s objectives and overcame the design challenges. Consultation between Woodman Brothers and SPS Envirowall resulted in the specification of the Direct Fix System, selected for its versatility and performance.
SPS Envirowall’s fully-certified Direct Fix EWI system offered design flexibility to accommodate the unique curvature of the facade, ensuring a seamless and visually appealing finish. The sheathing and insulation boards were cut and shaped to fit the curves precisely to create the unique façade required by the architect.
The Flexisil silicone topcoat was chosen for its wide range of available textures and consistent colours. Its acrylic base with silicone enhanced additives gives it the flexibility and extensive colour choice of acrylic with the water repellence and enhanced cleansing properties of silicone.
Because direct fix has a design life of at least 60 years and demonstrates remarkable robustness and resilience, it is designed to meet performance requirements over the building’s lifetime. The system’s components, including high-quality insulation materials and weather-resistant renders, offer excellent protection against the harsh weather conditions prevalent in coastal areas such as Portishead.
Installation Details and On-Site Challenges
Installing EWI systems on curved buildings can be challenging; this is compounded by the location of this site on an exposed coastal plain.
The system’s lightweight materials, combined with its ease of installation, enabled Woodman Brothers to complete the EWI installation in Portishead efficiently, resulting in significant time savings, without compromising quality.
Thermal Performance Enhancement
The Direct Fix system was instrumental in achieving an impressive U-Value of 0.18 W/(m²K). This was accomplished using dual-density mineral wool insulation, thereby reducing heat loss and optimizing energy consumption.
Contributory Factors Making it a ‘Stand-Out’ Project
The Arc exemplifies the versatility of EWI systems. The render finish enabled the building to achieve the architect’s bold vision, accommodating its curves seamlessly. The project’s outstanding achievements in terms of energy efficiency, resident comfort, and environmental sustainability also make it exemplary. The collaboration between SPS Envirowall and Woodman Brothers has resulted in a building that stands as a shining example of excellence in the EWI industry, not only for its residents, but for anyone who sees its distinctive curve and dome.
