Project Background:

Nestled in the picturesque town of Southport, 63 Waterloo Road was a modest bungalow, yearning for a transformation. The project aimed to reimagine this humble abode into a striking residence that seamlessly blends with the elegance of its surroundings, drawing inspiration from the iconic Royal Birkdale Clubhouse. This architectural marvel was designed with sustainability at its core, integrating advanced energy efficiency measures to benefit the homeowners while setting a new standard for private residential development.

Design and Energy Efficiency Measures:

The transformation involved the installation of a 200mm MW Ultimate silicone system with a hydrophobic additive, tailored for the coastal climate. The SFFC Hydor B + product was selected for its superior performance in coastal areas, ensuring durability and resistance to harsh weather conditions. The home’s thermal performance was dramatically improved, reducing the U-value from 1.8 W/m²K to an impressive 0.17 W/m²K. This was complemented by the installation of an Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) and an extensive array of solar panels, making the property a beacon of sustainability.

Unique Challenges and Solutions:

The project’s unique design required meticulous planning and execution. The architect’s vision was to create a structure with parapet detailing and multiple substrates, achieving an aspirational aesthetic goal while maintaining superior energy efficiency. This vision was realised through the collaboration between the homeowner, architect, and the skilled team at Oakley Construction. Specific training was provided on-site to ensure the successful implementation of modern construction methods, demonstrating their superiority over traditional techniques.

Aesthetic and Functional Integration:

The architectural design was heavily influenced by the nearby Royal Birkdale Clubhouse, renowned for its Art Deco style. The new structure seamlessly integrates with its surroundings, enhancing the visual appeal of the neighbourhood. The use of silicone render around the bay windows, ensured that the property retained its classic charm while boasting modern efficiency.

Impact on the Homeowner:

The homeowners have expressed immense satisfaction with their transformed residence. The advanced insulation and energy-efficient systems have significantly reduced energy consumption, leading to lower utility bills and enhanced comfort. “Our home is now a perfect blend of classic elegance and modern efficiency. The difference in our energy bills is remarkable, and the house feels comfortable year-round,” remarked the delighted homeowner.

Stand-Out Features:

This project is set to become a focal point during the British Open in 2026, showcasing the potential of sustainable, modern construction. Its seamless blend of advanced energy efficiency measures and architectural elegance makes it a standout project. The meticulous attention to detail and the successful overcoming of design and technical challenges highlight the innovative approach taken by Frank Oakley Ltd and Oakley Construction.
