Huddersfield Town AFC embarked on an ambitious project to create a brand-new set of modular training facilities at their training ground. The project demanded a solution that was flexible, durable, energy efficient, and finished to a high aesthetic standard — contributing to their newly achieved Category 2 Academy status— all while meeting tight timelines and challenging site conditions.

The main contractor for the project was Mockba Modular Ltd, with the rendering and finishing successfully carried out by D & C Rendering. The team chose a 50mm Rockwool mineral wool external wall insulation (EWI) system to provide both thermal performance and robust resistance to the elements. Certain areas of the structure were designed to project forward, adding depth and character to the façade; these sections were treated to a 70mm Rockwool application to match the base layer and maintain thermal continuity across all elevations.

EWI Pro’s 225 Premium Basecoat was applied directly to the mineral wool in Mockba’s Wakefield factory. Here, under carefully controlled conditions, the panels were prepared and finished off site. The modules were then transported to Huddersfield’s training ground where final finishing could be carried out efficiently and with minimal disruption.

Once in situ, a pure white topcoat was applied across the main elevations to give the buildings a crisp, contemporary appearance, while a bespoke blue tint — matched exactly to Huddersfield Town AFC’s iconic team colours — was used to highlight key architectural elements. The result is a striking, stylish and immediately recognisable set of facilities which reflect the forward-thinking nature of the academy.

A key consideration for this project was designing a system that would seamlessly connect together once all the modules were put in place on site. To achieve this, we were closely involved from the earliest stages of the design process. Our team contributed technical expertise to resolve challenging details, particularly around how the mineral wool would align and perform across the joint lines of the modules.

Multiple site visits were made, both to Mockba’s factory in Wakefield and to the Huddersfield Town AFC training ground, to check progress and advise on technical aspects. EWI Pro’s very own Tyler Cooper has been personally overseeing this project on behalf of the company, ensuring the highest standards of quality, compliance, and technical performance are upheld throughout. His direct involvement has included site visits and support to troubleshoot details and maintain alignment with EWI Pro’s system specifications.

Tyler’s hands-on approach has been instrumental in delivering a smooth and successful rollout, reinforcing EWI Pro’s commitment to excellence on every project. This hands-on approach meant we were able to resolve issues quickly, maintain high standards, and successfully deliver a finished building that meets all performance criteria — a perfect blend of functionality, style, and energy efficiency.
