Licata Systems have worked in conjunction with Build-Therm Services (an approved applicator of our systems) for many years, building a strong working relationship through the projects that we have completed together. For this reason, we are very pleased to nominate the ‘Hampton By Hilton, London Park Royal’ project delivered with Build-Therm Services for the best Refurbishment EWI + Brick, Clay, Ceramic, Stone Finish’ INCA Award.
The project design led by Maith Design Ltd, saw the redevelopment of the existing bar to create a 162-bedroom Hampton by Hilton Hotel. This refurbishment saw the derelict 1930s property retained and refurbished to its former glory. With the property being a listed building, it was imperative that the design honoured the original art deco features of the structure and which we ultimately achieved utilising modern-day technologies. The core design of facade revolved around the brickwork for the retained building which was considerably aged considering its positioning on one of London’s busiest commuter road’s (A406) and adjacent to a bustling tube station.
Working together at design development stage, Build-Therm Services and Licata Systems, proposed a brick slip solution utilising handmade brick slips produced by Matclad to blend with the existing. Unfortunately, in the absence of physical samples, this was predominately led by images and a series of on-site samples to reach the perfect blend to satisfy the planners and wider design team, this process took around 14 months to complete.
The core challenge with matching the brick slips to the existing in situ brickwork was trying to achieve the balance of the blends which, due to the natural aging of the building was diverse and non-standard, therefore the appearance of one area could considerably differ from that of another. Ironically, this approach was how we achieved the final result, through utilising a combination of the various on-site mock-ups produced to achieve the perfect blend.
The Brick Slip System comprised of the Licata Systems External Wall System incorporating 160mm Mineral Wool Insulation to achieve the required u-value fixed to a structural steel framing system with the brick slips adhesively fixed to the EWI System. This system was perfectly suited for this scheme as it seamlessly formed around the curves to mirror the retain aspect of the hotel and with the bespoke brick slips, blended effortlessly to create a single harmonious building.
Whilst construction of this façade was impacted by the pandemic, working together, significant programme delays were negated and a magnificent final result was created … one that all parties were proud of.
