ACHIEVING A HIGH-QUALITY FINISH ON A DREAM HOME
Surrounded by its own private lake and forest, a contemporary new build home with an indoor swimming pool has been brought to life in Nottinghamshire.
Nottingham-based construction firm D L Rhodes & Son was contracted for the project to ensure this dream family home was completed to the highest possible standards.
Opting for a contemporary white rendered façade for the whole property, Saint-Gobain Weber products were specified. Stuart Owen, application manager at Weber, was brought in to provide technical expertise to ensure this exacting finish was achieved.
Technical issues that were overcome included a step in some of the blockwork surrounding the indoor swimming pool, measuring approximately 175mm. Stuart suggested installing an external wall insulation (EWI) system on this section to avoid having unevenness in the render. This would also aid thermal insulation where cavity insulation wasn’t possible.
For this, Eddie Argyle from EA Plasterers installed the webertherm XM system, made up of 160mm of webertherm EPS insulation board with weberend LAC rapid – applied in two 3mm-thick passes of render, with a Weber standard meshcloth embedded in between.
On areas of simple blockwork that were insulated in the cavity, Eddie applied weberend OCR to a thickness of 15mm. Ideal as a base coat for all Weber decorative finishes, weberend OCR is a premixed sand and cement render which is suitable for use on brickwork, blockwork, concrete, and other suitably prepared substrates. It can be applied in one coat by pump or hand and avoids the drying time associated with multi-coat render systems, while offering results equivalent to traditional two coat renders.
A third Weber solution was used to cover the rear elevation, where Knauf Aquapanel render boards had been fixed to the substrate to level out the façade to achieve a seamless finish. The weberend MT system is suitable for use on approved render carrier boards and is ideal for modern methods of construction, offering a high degree of weather protection and crack resistance.
The entire property was completed using webersil TF – a silicone enhanced render finish – in Winter White, offering optimum facade protection to the home.
The strategic integration of the external wall insulation system, along with other innovative facade solutions, underscores the project’s commitment to excellence in modern construction. By addressing technical challenges and providing versatile finishing options, this Nottinghamshire new build exemplifies the highest standards in craftsmanship, energy efficiency, and aesthetic design. The collaboration between D L Rhodes & Son, EA Plasterers and Saint-Gobain Weber has resulted in a home that not only meets but exceeds the expectations of contemporary living, delivering a flawless white render finish.
