INCA Case Study: Bromford SHDF Scheme, Gloucestershire
Bromford SHDF Scheme
Project Type: Refurbishment
Building Type: Low Rise, Residential
Architect: VOR Group
System Designer: Structherm
Installer: Joyner Group
System & Finish: Structherm EWI and ArtBrick
U-Value Before: 2.36 W/m²K
U-Value After: 0.24 W/m²K
Background to the Project:
Bromford required an EWI solution for properties in a planning sensitive area which required a ‘Cotswold’ stone appearance.
The Solution & Specification:
Structherm’s ArtBrick External Wall Insulation was used to replicate the complex Cotswold stone in order for the scheme to progress, meeting the requirement of both client and planners for a stone effect finish.
Mineral Fibre insulation 150mm thick improved the u-value through the walls to 0.24!
Structherm’s RoofLine closure system was also utilised on the rear single storey extensions to increase the overhang to the roof, in order to accommodate the EWI system.
The Installation & Challenges on site:
Wates were the main contractor, with the Joyner Group installing the EWI, and all concerned had to manage the logistics of a tight site in a rural area. Strict on-site support and monitoring were required to ensure the ArtBrick stone render finish was acceptable for such a planning sensitive area.
In order to ensure that the RoofLine system was quick and easy to install on site, Structherm undertook a detailed survey and developed a 3D model to show the sequencing of the RoofLine system installation. A particular challenge was presented in that the door and window heads were tight to the soffit and hence special flashings were engineered to ensure that the thermal envelope was maintained.
Problems overcome:
Various trades had to be managed carefully and effectively. Materials were stored in a compound which was a 10-minute drive from the properties.
The End Result:
An aesthetically pleasing finish, replicating the required ‘Cotswold’ stone appearance, as well as robust design detailing.
Quotes:
The Solid Stone properties at Victory Villas required a new breathable External Wall Insulation System, that tied in the local vernacular of the Cotswolds town. James and the team at Structherm were instrumental in advising available products and developing the difficult details for the scheme.
We utilised their breathable mineral wool insulation and art brick stone effect finish, along with the XPS insulated stone effect cills to replicate the details of the existing property. For the rear outriggers, extending the eaves was not an option. Fortunately, we were able to utilise the newly PAS approved RoofLine eaves closer system, which allowed us to provide a continuous line of insulation externally.
James and the team were always available to meet on site to discuss the difficult details and ensure a high standard of installation.
The EWI allowed us to bring the existing u-values of the wall down from 2.36 W/(m²K) to 0.24 W/(m²K) This will vastly improve the thermal comfort of the properties, reduce energy bills and reduce carbon.
