Meir Square, Stoke On Trent

System & Finish: Structherm EWI & Silicone Finish
U-Value Before: N/A
U-Value After: 0.30 W/m²K
Background to the Project:
The project, with Unitas the client, and Wood Street Maintenance the Approved Installation Contractor, centred on bungalows in Stoke-on-Trent, and consisted of replacing areas of PVC panels with insulated render.
The Solution & Specification:
The requirement was the removal of existing blank PVC panels below windows and at side of doors, and then replacing with insulation fixed back to blockwork and finishing with silicone render.
The Installation & Challenges on site:
One of the key challenges to this project was the fact that the properties were habited, predominantly by elderly and vulnerable tenants. This required experienced TLO’s who could convey the planned works in an easy-to-understand and careful manner, while also fostering a positive working relationship with the contractors.
The wellbeing of the tenants was of the highest priority throughout the process, as well as keeping them fully informed at every step.
Replacement windows and doors were also part of the works in some cases.
Problems overcome:
The tight programme schedule required all parties to act efficiently and effectively. Regular site meetings and walkarounds of installs were undertaken in conjunction with the client and building control, to ensure everyone was satisfied with the works.
The End Result:
Visually upgraded and thermally efficient bungalows for elderly and vulnerable tenants, boosting their wellbeing and reducing stress and anxiety levels over any heating issues.
Unitas continue to use this solution across their wider property portfolio of similar archetypes as a cost effective and robust system.
Quote:
“The Colclough Road refurbishment demonstrates how sensitive regeneration can honour architectural heritage while delivering modern performance. Situated within the Meir Square zone of architectural interest, these 1920s homes presented unique challenges. Structherm’s expertise was instrumental in helping us navigate conservation requirements, develop a sympathetic specification, and deliver a high-quality insulated render system that respects the original design. This project sets a benchmark for future conservation-led improvements across Stoke-on-Trent.”
