Parkfield Cottages comprises six distinctive Swedish timber framed homes owned by Stroud District Council. The refurbishment was designed to improve thermal performance, durability and longevity while preserving the unique character of these non traditional properties.

Working with M D Group Bristol, Joyner P A Ltd installed the Structherm GPL Structural Cladding System as part of a wider retrofit programme including replacement roofs, windows, doors, external wall insulation and new timber cladding.

The project presented significant logistical and technical challenges. Access was restricted to a narrow single-track lane, preventing conventional deliveries, so all scaffolding, insulation and materials were manually transported to the properties. Careful planning, sequencing and close collaboration between all trades ensured the programme progressed safely and efficiently despite these constraints.

A further challenge was integrating the EWI system with the reinstated timber cladding. Following replacement roofs, windows and doors, the Structherm GPL panels were installed with exceptional precision to align with the new cladding, ensuring structural integrity, thermal performance and a high quality architectural finish.

Despite the complex sequencing and restricted access, the project was delivered to the highest standards of workmanship. The completed system provides a durable, thermally efficient envelope that supports the new timber façade while meeting both the client’s performance objectives and the planning requirements to retain the cottages’ distinctive appearance.

The refurbishment has created warmer, more energy-efficient homes with improved weather protection and reduced heat loss, helping lower residents’ energy costs while extending the service life of these unique properties.

Parkfield Cottages demonstrates how technical expertise, meticulous installation and collaborative working can overcome challenging site conditions to deliver an outstanding EWI refurbishment that successfully balances heritage, performance and long term sustainability.
