The refurbishment of the Department of Defence buildings in Renmore, Galway, demonstrates how external wall insulation can do far more than improve thermal performance. It shows how a carefully specified system and exceptional workmanship can completely revitalise an existing public building, extending its service life while delivering a high-quality architectural finish.

Working in partnership with Cody Architects, Sean Nugent Plastering completed the retrofit using the ATLAS Roker System with 120mm mineral wool insulation. The system was selected to provide an optimal combination of thermal efficiency, vapour permeability, acoustic performance and the highest standards of fire safety, making it ideally suited to an important public-sector building.

A defining feature of the project is the outstanding quality of execution. Clean lines, crisp detailing and seamless integration around window reveals, façade junctions and architectural features have transformed the appearance of the building while maintaining the integrity of the insulation system. The finished façade reflects the precision and craftsmanship required to deliver a project of this standard.

Beyond its striking appearance, the retrofit has significantly enhanced the building’s performance. Improved thermal efficiency, increased occupant comfort, enhanced fire protection and long-term durability have been achieved without compromising the building’s architectural character.

Successful retrofit is measured not only by energy performance but by the quality of the finished building. This project is an outstanding example of both. Through the expertise of Sean Nugent Plastering and the performance of the ATLAS Roker System, an existing public building has been transformed into a modern, durable and energy-efficient facility with an architectural finish that will stand the test of time.

Successful retrofit is measured not only by energy performance but by the quality of the finished building. This project is an outstanding example of both.
