As part of City of Edinburgh Council’s ambitious housing improvement programme, a number of low-rise maisonette blocks in the Wardieburn area were selected for an external wall insulation (EWI) upgrade to improve both the energy efficiency and the appearance of the buildings. The goal was to extend the life of the housing stock while significantly enhancing thermal performance and visual appeal for residents.
The buildings had previously been painted in a range of bright and unusual colours including purple, lilac, and pastel green – colours that had faded inconsistently over time due to exposure and weathering. This posed a challenge in both matching the original aesthetic and achieving a unified finish that would be approved by the council and appreciated by the community.
Following a thorough specification and product review process, the SPS Envirowall A1 Mineral EWI system was selected as the preferred solution. It met all technical and safety requirements, including non-combustibility and excellent thermal performance. In addition to its robust credentials, the system also offered the design flexibility required to accommodate the client’s specific aesthetic ambitions.
A key element of this project was colour-matching. With the original colour references unknown and significant fading present, SPS Envirowall collaborated closely with the client over multiple site visits to capture and replicate the desired hues. Bespoke colour samples were developed and presented for approval, ensuring the new finish remained faithful to the buildings’ character while providing a refreshed and modern appearance.
Installation of the system was delivered efficiently and to a high standard. Bespoke detailing solutions were implemented to accommodate complex junctions and features on the existing façades, with close coordination between the installer and SPS Envirowall’s technical team. Minimal disruption to residents and a smooth works programme contributed to the success of the project.
The finished result has transformed the appearance of the maisonette blocks, delivering long-term thermal benefits and an uplifted streetscape. The Wardieburn project stands as a strong example of how collaboration between product manufacturer, client and contractor can achieve both practical and aesthetic excellence in low-rise refurbishment.
