The Cambridge City Council SHDF Wave 2.2 Thermal Improvement Scheme was a continuation of works following the successful delivery of a previous batch of almost 100 properties back in 2024 with SHDF Wave 2.1. This project consisted of over 140 uninsulated solid brick properties throughout the Cambridge region, focusing on domestic decarbonisation, healthy homes and aesthetic enhancement. The project brief was clear: deliver a high-quality, compliant retrofit solution that would significantly improve thermal performance, reduce carbon emissions, and enhance the living conditions of residents.

Installation contractor Strata Insulated Renders Ltd are experienced and renowned within the EWI industry for their attention to high quality standards, workmanship, project management and for their industry knowledge. Strata Insulated Renders Ltd have worked with the project design team, main contractor (Aran Insulation) and the client Cambridge City Council on previous EWI projects, knowing exactly what is expected.

This project had over half a dozen architypes, which required bespoke detailing around areas such as passage ways, steps in existing façade, extensions, bay windows and more. Close collaboration with retrofit designer, client and main contractor ensured that all measures met PAS 2035 requirements, demonstrating a commitment to best practice in retrofit delivery.

The system installed was a BBA Certificated Johnstone’s Stormshield Mineral Wool EWI System 110mm, finished with a Johnstone’s Stormshield Silicone Enhanced Render 1.5mm Finish. The system was selected for its proven thermal performance, A rated Fire protection, durability, and suitability for retrofit applications.

Multiple measures were assessed and installed following approved project designer recommendations. Including Loft Insulation, Window Replacements, Newly installed Doors, Below DPC HD System, Selected EV charges, in addition to the specified EWI System. Whilst focusing on a “whole house” approach – Completing necessary landscaping improvements and installing mechanical ventilation.

The properties also benefited from roofline extensions, newly installed rain water goods, soffit and facia upgrades and improved drainage to name a few.

What sets this project apart is not only its scale, but the quality and consistency achieved under tight time constraints and challenging site conditions. The ability to expand the program while maintaining installation excellence highlights the strength of both the system and the delivery team. Whilst focusing on multiple measures to maximize efficiencies.

There were also many project related environmental commitments – Including enhanced drainage systems installed and the introduction of over 70 personalised bird boxes fixed to one in every two properties completed. RSPB reports show a National decline in many bird species throughout the UK. Regionally there are rare bird species where their population is at risk of Extinction – Including certain sparrow, marsh tit, warbler and more. A spokesman for a local charity funded group focusing on bird statistics and conservation called Cambridge Bird Club said “With the ever-increasing pressure on the regional bird population, this specific gesture is most welcome to support future generations of our diverse bird population”.

This scheme is a perfect example of a large-scale successful retrofit delivery, combining technical excellence, logistical precision, and meaningful environmental impact. The visual transformation has significantly improved kerb appeal, contributing positively to the wider community and reinforcing a sense of pride among residents.
