Formerly known as Llancarfan Primary School, the newly built South Point Primary School has become the very first “Net Zero” school in Wales!

The school was formed in 2021 when the nearby Llancarfan Primary School was relocated to Rhoose in the Vale of Glamorgan. The new, BREEAM ‘Excellent’ school sits on a sloping, coastal site at the heart of a new residential development.

The north-south orientated building benefits from a highly-insulated envelope, paired with renewable technologies including extensive PV coverage, air-source heat pumps and on-site battery storage to provide an exceptionally sustainable, modern school.

The physical measures are complimented by a client that is committed and open to the behavioural change necessary to ensure that the maximum benefit is taken from the net zero carbon design.

Wetherby were appointed as system designer for the external envelope. The local authority were keen to use a local supplier and a sustainable insulant, again supplied locally.

Wetherby and their specified solution ticked the boxes being located less than 20 miles from the project as were insulation supplier Rockwool, hence reduced emissions when transporting the materials and with all waste being recycled via the Bridgend depot.

SAM Drylining, an experienced, skilled Wetherby approved contractor we appointed to carry out installation works.

The system used was the Wetherby Render Carrier Board System incorporating 180mm A1 Fire Rated Stone Wool. Finish was 1.5mm Silicone 4S to main areas. Window reveals overpainted in two contrasting shades of teal in colours 3030-B-90-G and 2020-B-90-G

The resulting project was extremely well received and has featured on both national and regional television news.

I think about the school as someone putting on a coat for insulation to start. There are building regulation standards for this but we have taken the thickness of insulation way beyond that.
