SERS were appointed as the principal contractor by Tai Calon Community Housing to carry out new external wall insulation and render refurbishment on a number of detached, semi-detached and blocks of flats in the Rassau area of South Wales. The works were required to be undertaken at short notice and under difficult conditions given their position in the South Wales valleys in the winter period.

The work consisted of renewing and refurbishing GRP & metro tile roofs, new fascia and soffit to a number of properties where existing was rotten & damaged, Removal of hanging tiles, Cavity extraction & wall ties, Asbestos removal, gas isolation, new 90mm External wall insulation, 30mm internal porches, render only on the externals and sheds, finished in a Barleycorn dash and silicone texture to tunnel alleyways, various groundworks, fencing reinstatement , all work was done using local companies and contractors .

The works were planned in detail to maintain productivity during the winter months between varying temperature changes and inclement weather. SERS worked closely with the client and engaged with residents and local councillors throughout, to inform them of work being undertaken, property access and progress.

Although challenging at times, the scheme did bring the community together and the relationships developed throughout the period, with the end finishes making a substantial improvement to the appearance of the properties, but also crucially supporting the residents during the ongoing fuel bill challenges.

An SPSenvirowall system was used with a 90mm Lamdatherm insulation board, and a hand applied SPSenvirowall retro base high polymer insulation basecoat, and a barleycorn dash finish. The works consisted of removing old cavity insulation to remove causes of damp in properties, as well as remedial works for existing GRP flat roofs and porches. New windowsills were installed alongside remedial works for lead flashings and coping stones. This work made a huge difference to the community and improvement for the Tai Calon housing stock in the area.
