Evesham Court Barracks Hill is one of the highest situated areas of Newport in South Wales, looking over the river Usk and the historic Transporter Bridge it is therefore considered a high exposure area. The properties had been exposed to the elements for approximately 40 yrs and required a varied amount of construction work to ensure they were retrofit ready.

What makes Evesham court Barracks Hill unique is the property types and the layout of the development which include blocks of flats, two bedroom and three-bedroom semi and detached properties of all distinctive designs interlocking together to make unique street scenes. Archway and passageways adjoining several courts on the development. The development being built on hill forming varied ground levels and DPC details. DPC (plinth) depths range from 300mm to 2000mm.

Pre- retrofit design works, technical detailing by Evolve the retrofit installer and System Supplier SPS Envirowall.

Evolve HES completed the successful retrofit of 11 properties that make up Hedyn’s Evesham Court residence in Autumn 2024. The project was awarded to them following a tender via CHIC procurement framework. The project was funded by the Welsh Government’s Optimised Retrofit Programme (ORP) with each property having around £48,000 spent on it to fully transform performance and appearance, all to PAS standards and full Trustmark compliance. It was the first ORP-funded project for their Hedyn partnership.

Project challenges: during the assessment stage, the assessment team confirmed the presence of asbestos. Removing it safely was a critical aspect of the project, particularly as the residents remained living in the properties throughout. The site manager coordinated the removal of the asbestos ensuring no risk to occupants or site workers.

Resident outcomes:

  • Reduced energy consumption
  • Lower energy bills
  • Enhanced curb appeal

Total value of the project – £303,000

EPC at start of project – C

EPC at end of project – B

Estimated amount of energy saved – 33,935 kg CO2

Resident testimonial: “It has been a lot warmer inside this winter and the building looks so much better from the outside. It has given the street a facelift.”
