Background to the project
Boardwalk is a desirable residential development in a prime location on Eastbourne Harbour housing 50 apartments. alsecco was engaged in the project as part of an upgrade, to refresh the exterior aesthetic and improve the thermal insulation.
The solution and specification
As an external insulated render system, Ecomin 300 was specified in the upgrade. The system has all the required testing certifications for fire (rated A2) as well as holding BBA approval.
Being used in a marine environment, durability and resilience were vital to the products used. To this end a silicon resin render finish was applied, with the eye-catching yellow finish set next to fresh white creating a stand-out visual on the harbour.
These finishes are highly weather resistant, vapour permeable and UV stable, helping to protect the building fabric, reducing the need for maintenance and improving durability, which is ideal for the marin environment.
The installation and challenges on site
Throughout the project the residents remained in-situ meaning that the work needed to be carried out with minimal disruption.
In addition, the location posed a challenge in protecting the marine environment. It was imperative that the project did not generate any waste that could accidentally wash into the adjacent harbour.
Problems overcome
Aware of the potential for disruption to residents, the team remained fully engaged with residents at all times to allow any concerns to be dealt with. Site updates were issued frequently to keep residents informed of where the project was up to – and to confirm it was running on time.
To avoid marine pollution, extra precautions were made while stripping off the old system so that no waste would blow into the water. The working area was fully tented with vacuums running constantly to contain any dust generated, while hourly clean-ups helped to minimise the accumulation of waste material allowing it to be disposed of cleanly and in a contained manner with no risk of pollution to the harbour.
The end result
Through the use of the Ecomin 300 external wall insulation system, Boardwalk has been upgraded to enjoy a clean and vibrant exterior, with a striking yellow finish standing out next to the bright white of the refreshed render.
The upgrade has provided the building with a luxurious finish that compliments it’s prestigious harbourside location in Eastbourne – and will provide the protection needed against the marine environment.
