INCA Case Study: Ninewells JWCC Reclad

Located on the western outskirts of Dundee, Ninewells Hospital is one of the largest teaching hospitals in Scotland and internationally respected for pioneering advancements in laparoscopic surgery, cancer care, and robotic-assisted treatments. The refurbishment of the Jacqui Wood Cancer Centre within the hospital marks a critical step in modernising healthcare environments and ensuring safe, comfortable facilities for both patients and staff.

As part of this high-rise refurbishment, Benx/SPS Envirowall was specified to provide a durable, fire-safe, and cost-effective cladding solution. The project utilised the SPS Envirowall Cavity Wall System 1, an Agrément-approved system by KIWA BDA. Its specification was driven by the need for high thermal performance, excellent weather resistance, and robust structural integrity critical factors in any healthcare setting, particularly one as busy and vital as Ninewells.

The system’s lightweight nature and ease of installation allowed for efficient project delivery, minimising disruption to hospital operations. Its thermal efficiency contributed significantly to improved energy performance and occupant comfort, supporting the hospital’s ongoing sustainability objectives.

Aesthetic enhancement was achieved through the use of Rockpanel façade boards, which not only provided a striking and modern appearance but also met the strictest standards of fire safety. Naturally fire-resistant and flexible, Rockpanel was the ideal complement to the underlying cladding system, offering long-term protection and design adaptability.

The combination of SPS Envirowall’s tried and tested system with high-performance Rockpanel boards delivered a refurbishment solution that balances performance, safety, and aesthetics. This project is a testament to how thoughtful façade refurbishment can significantly elevate an existing healthcare facility, not only meeting today’s compliance and environmental standards but also enhancing the environment for its users.
