GA/23.10.09 WINS 1/2FROME COMMUNITY HOSPITAL WINS INCA AWARD
Just in case patients need cheering up, two new hospitals have been overclad with insulated render, one in bright and imaginative colours, the other in pure white. Even more important, this treatment has achieved particularly thermally efficient buildings with the constant warm and comfortable internal temperature so important for hospitals. Both hospitals achieved the coverted INCA Andy Swan Award 2009 for the best use of external wall insulation. Overall winner in the competition, as well as winner in the medical buildings category, was the Frome Community Hospital, Roddon Road, Frome, Somerset, where the PermaRock external wall insulation system was used. The specifier, DKA, used bold and bright through-coloured acrylic render in terracotta and curry colours, contrasted with white and other facia materials such as timber cladding and brickwork to create a striking appearance. This incorporated 130mm mineral fibre slabs, adhesive and mechanically fixed onto blockwork. A very low U-value of just 0.21W/m2K was achieved to keep the building heat loss to a minimum. The main contractor was Laing O’Rourke Wales and West; the system designer was PermaRock Products Ltd; and the installer, Joyner PA (Cymru) Ltd – the latter two INCA members. Highly commended was the Bristol RACC Hospital, Marlborough Hill, Bristol BS1. The specifier, the University of Bristol Hospital Trust, chose the Permarock external wall insulation system, achieving a constant U-value of 0.27W/m2K across the lightweight steel structure by adjusting the thickness of the mineral fibre insulant from 30 to 60mm at specific locations. The finish was white silicone render. The system designer was PermaRock Products Ltd; the installer, E J Horrocks Ltd.
