GA/17.04.09 COASTAL 1/2COASTAL APARTMENTS WIN INCA AWARDS Low Energy Home Wins Private House Category
Apartments built on Britain’s coast require particular attention to the detailing to ensure protection against extreme weather conditions, and to meet today’s stringent Building Regulations. Insulated renders have been used to envelope modern construction methods in award-winning developments, to meet these standards and to enable imaginative aesthetic design to use the curved surfaces currently demanded. Examples of this are two winners in the residential category of the INCA Andy Swan Awards for the best use of external wall insulation, sponsored by the Insulated Render and Cladding Association. The winner is the Sands, Scarborough, a new development of 55 acres, set within spectacular woodland scenery overlooking North Bay, Scarborough. Constructed on a lightweight metal frame, the insulated render system applied had to have accreditation for this purpose. The PermaRock system, specified by Tolent Construction, consisted of 140mm of mineral fibre insulation, finished with a white through-coloured acrylic render, achieving a U-value of at least 0.30W/m2K. This complemented timber cladding also used on the facades. Products had to be fire-safe, thermally efficient and environmentally friendly. The system designer was PermaRock Products Ltd; and the installer, George Howe Ltd, both INCA members. Burbo Point, Hall Road West, Crosby, was highly commended. The development consists of new luxury apartments situated on the Formby coastline, and includes a penthouse reminiscent of a circular lighthouse in the design. Weathering from the elements was the prime consideration in choosing an insulated render system, coupled with an aesthetically pleasing appearance and outstanding thermal performance. RAL Architects Ltd specified an external wall insulation system, consisting of 50mm expanded polystyrene, finished with a rolled texture silicone render, to clad the medium density solid block walls. The system incorporated specially designed rails and channels to create a cavity to prevent the entrapment of moisture and facilitate air circulation, along with detailing to prevent moisture penetration. The silicone render finish provides high vapour permeability, water shedding capability and resistance to surface dirt. The installer was Newton & Foulger Ltd – an INCA member. Also highly commended were new residential apartments at Northumberland Road, Old Trafford, Stretford, Manchester M16 9DX. SMC Dev (UK) Manchester specified a mechanical external wall insulation system, incorporating 90mm EPS and finished with white acrylic render. This clad a Metsec and 12mm cement particle board construction. The installer, Astley Facades Ltd, is an INCA member. Winning the private house category was Harkin House, Lambley, Notts, a four-bedroomed residence planned around a three-storey central space. The external wall insulation system was specified by Marsh Grochowski ‘to allow a high level of internal mass to be used thermally’ and, with its smooth finish, it also enabled extensive curved surfaces to be incorporated in the design. The construction is load bearing blockwork with external insulation, incorporating 110mm EPS, finished with a cream/grey and light mauve render. The installer, K & E Peck Ltd, is an INCA member.
