GA/06.10.08 DIVERSE 1/2NEW DIVERSE PUBLIC BUILDINGS USE INSULATED RENDER SYSTEMS Winners of INCA Andy Swan Awards
A new railway and bus station in Barnsley and a new healthcare building in Oxford illustrate the diverse use of insulated renders for their outer protection, visual appeal, and to achieve U-values to keep abreast or ahead of Building Regulations. Both have won the coveted Andy Swan Award, sponsored by the Insulated Render and Cladding Association, for the best use of external wall insulation in their categories. Winning the commercial category is the Barnsley Transport Interchange, Ceag Building, Pontefract Road, Barnsley S71. This railway and bus station used the Rockshield external wall insulation system. This incorporated 50mm Rockwool slab and lamella. The finish was 1.5mm green, lime green, yellow, blue, and sand silicone render. The specifiers, Jefferson Sheard Architects, used the system to create all curved substrates as a design feature, using metsec with 3 x 6mm ply beneath the insulated render system. The system designer was Rockwool Ltd; and the installer, Render Systems Ltd - both INCA members. Winner of the medical category is the Bartlemas Surgery, East Oxford Health Centre, Oxford. This is a new healthcare building, where the specifier, Hunter and Partners, used external wall insulation in order to achieve U-values in excess of current Building Regulations, whilst enabling a dramatic visual appearance to be created. They specified the PermaRock mineral fibre system to 100mm and their EPS system to 10 and 20mm to achieve a U-value of 0.30W/m2K over a blockwork substrate. Acrylic render in blue and white was used alongside other facade materials, such as cedar cladding and brickwork. Curved elevations and an unusual undulating roof line were designed into the project. The system designer was PermaRock Products Ltd, and the installer, E J Horrocks Ltd - both INCA members. Both projects were reviewed by well known architect and broadcaster, Maxwell Hutchinson, of the Hutchinson Studio, at the INCA national seminar, held on October 1, at Lancashire County Cricket Ground.
