COMMUNITY PROJECT WINS INCA AWARD
Two projects designed to benefit their local communities have won INCA Andy Swan 2008 Awards, educational buildings category. The Awards, presented for the best use of external wall insulation, are sponsored by the Insulated Render and Cladding Association.
The winner is the Deaf Cultural Centre, Ladywood Road, Birmingham B16. The specifier, DS Architects, required “the project to bring together diverse elements of the deaf community under one roof, to provide space for leisure and arts pursuits, social events and exhibitions”.
The blockwork construction of the new building required innovative techniques to achieve additional impact. This was achieved with a cantilevered effect to the first and second floors, combined with the sharpness created through the use of the synthetic render finish to the Weber.therm XM external wall insulation system. The system incorporated 110mm of expanded polystyrene providing a U-value of 0.284W/m2K. The system designer was Weber; and the installer Gaffney and Guinan Contractors Ltd - both INCA members.
The runner-up was Macclesfield College, Park Lane, Macclesfield, Cheshire. Ellis Williams Architects of Runcorn, required a clear, modern building with vivid contrasting colours. They used the WBS external wall insulation system incorporating 90mm of expanded polystyrene on an SFS and cement particle board substrate. This was finished in white silicone render and contrasting terracotta tiles. The system designer was Wetherby Building Systems Ltd; and the installer, Astley Facades Ltd – both INCA members.
