GA/21.12.07 AFFORDABLE 1/2AFFORDABLE HOUSING AND STUDENT ACCOMMODATION WIN PRESTIGIOUS INCA AWARDS
Affordable housing with a crisp, white panelised look; and student accommodation with the feel of a new private development have each won the prestigious Andy Swan Award 2007 for the best use of insulated render in their class. The Awards are presented annually by the Insulated Render and Cladding Association. Winner of the affordable housing category is Wandle Road House, Croydon, consisting of new build, affordable apartments, four to five storeys in height, aligned with an adjacent flyover. This used a WBS fully vented insulated render system onto a timber frame construction. Mineral wool was applied within the timber frame cavity, with 30 mm EPS within the external insulation system. A panelised look was achieved with a clean, crisp render finish. The client was housing association, Milford Group Ltd; the architect, Howard Fairbairn & Partners; the timber frame supplier, Guildford Timber Frames Ltd; the system designer, Wetherby Building Systems Ltd; and the installer, CRL Facades – the latter two members of INCA. Winner of the student accommodation category is Dryburn House, Durham, which has brought new life to the former site of Dryburn Hospital and is being used as an example of the quality of future accommodation which the Three Rivers Housing Association and the University hope to achieve. Two four-storey blocks, consisting of 78 student flats, were constructed with lightweight metal framing, incorporating PermaRock’s mineral fibre insulated render system at 60 mm, 80 mm and 140 mm thicknesses. A white acrylic through-coloured render was specified to provide a stunning finish, giving the feel of a new private development and providing contrast with timber cladding areas and brickwork to the ground floor areas. High levels of thermal performance were achieved (0.35W/m2K and better) through the combined effects of insulation between the metal studs and the insulated render system. The architect was Ryder HKS; the main contractor, Laing O’Rourke; the system designer PermaRock Products Ltd and the installer, George Howe Ltd – the latter two members of INCA.
