CURVACEOUS AWARD-WINNING HOSPITAL BUILDING

FACILITATED BY EXTERNAL WALL INSULATION

The new entrance known as the Rotunda Building, for Coventry’s £334 million University Hospital, Walsgrave, has won the Andy Swan 2006 Award for the best use of external wall insulation for a medical building. The Awards are sponsored by the Insulated Render and Cladding Association (INCA).

The 12m high building takes its name from its striking appearance with a curved façade around the circular building of lightweight steel frame construction.

The specifier, Skanska, used 1400 square metres of Roxsulation, a polymer-based barrier external wall insulation system, incorporating 70 mm of mineral wool lamella insulation to satisfy Building Regulations for energy efficiency. A Lymestone finish was used primarily, with highlighting features finished in TerraNeo. Ashlar grooves were incorporated into the design to give an authentic appearance. The system designer was Dryvit UK; the installer, ECL Contracts – both INCA members.

The Insulated Render and Cladding Association is at P O Box 12, Haslemere, Surrey GU27 3AH; tel: 01428 654011; fax: 01428 651401; e-mail: incaassociation@aol.com; or visit the INCA website at: www.inca-ltd.org.uk
