POLICE HEADQUARTERS AND ‘DROP-IN’ CENTRE CONSTRUCTED WITH EXTERNAL WALL INSULATION To Earn Andy Swan 2006 Awards
A police headquarters and a community ‘drop-in’ centre, have both been constructed using external wall insulation to earn them the Andy Swan 2006 Award for the best use of this process for new public buildings. The Awards are sponsored annually by the Insulated Render and Cladding Association (INCA). The winner in this category was the new headquarters for the Gloucestershire Police Authority, at Waterfalls Business Park, Quedgley, Gloucester. The StoTherm Classic external wall insulation system was used incorporating expanded polystyrene to 100 mm, 130 mm and 150 mm thicknesses to achieve a high thermal insulation standard. The specifier was McBains Cooper Consulting Ltd, of Oxford; the system designer Sto Ltd; and the installer ECL Contracts Ltd, of Rugby – the latter two organisations being members of INCA. Runner up was the Lauries Centre, Exmouth Street, Birkenhead, Merseyside, a ‘drop-in’ centre for the local community, which houses Age Concern Wirral, police community liaison and other educational and social assistance facilities. The specifier required a high quality façade over the Metsec construction. The walling system was designed and installed by E J Horrocks Ltd. It incorporated the PermaRock external wall insulation system, with 80 mm of mineral fibre to meet current U-value requirements for thermal insulation. The finish was in caramel colour to blend in with the surrounding buildings. A feature was the window profile with window pod detail design. The system designer was Permarock Products Ltd; and the installer, E J Horrocks Ltd, of Birkenhead – both members of INCA.
