Private Apartments: Refurbished/Remodelled
Winner: Highgate Hospital Conversion, London

The former Highgate Hospital, in Highgate, London, has been refurbished, remodelled and transformed into six large luxury homes.

The specifier, Cityscape Plc, needed to completely transform the exterior of the building, making it unrecognisable as a hospital, yet blending in with surrounding architecture. The PermaRock insulated render system was specified as the ideal solution to achieve this, and to meet new build thermal performance standards and Building Regulations. Mineral wool and EPS insulation to 95 mm produced U-values of 0.29 W/m2K.

The transformation of the exterior walls was substantial, giving homes a traditional look, with features such as quoins, bands, ashlar grooves and window frame profiles, achieved by means of the insulated render system. The EPS allowed the ashlar grooves to the ground floor level to be formed cutting the bands into the insulation board. The architectural profiles and quoins were specially made by the system designer, with the white acrylic through-coloured render used to complement the profiles.

The system designer was Permarock Products Ltd; the installer, George Howe Ltd – both INCA members.
