New Build: Private Houses
Winner: Lymm Water Tower, Cheshire

Lymm Water Tower, Tower Lane, Lymm, Cheshire is a particularly unusual private residence, converted from a derelict 130-year old grade II listed Victorian stone water tower into a family home. The aim of the owners and architects was to blend a contemporary futuristic design with the building’s traditional features. The simple but powerful detailing of the new building works in synergy with the old.

MR Swisstherm external wall insulation was specified by architects, Ellis Williams, for energy efficiency in compliance with current U-value requirements by incorporating 20 mm of EPS insulation. The high performance, lightweight Silkolitt render provided a low-maintenance, water repellent finish, with excellent durability and impact resistance. The continuous white curves and sharp angles made a bold and ambitious visual statement. The overall aim was to use local high-tech and energy conserving green building materials.

The system designer was Alumasc Exterior Building Products Ltd; the installer Pegasus Externals Ltd - both INCA members; with the construction work carried out by the Redrow Group.
