Medical: New Build & Refurbishment
Runner-up: Richard Doll Building, Oxford

The Richard Doll Building, Headington Hospital, Oxford, is a new medical research centre, built as a Movements 4 Innovation Project, with a strong emphasis on waste management and recycling.

The specifier, Nicholas Hare Architects, required high thermal performance, and a crisp modern jointless appearance. The Rockshield external wall insulation system incorporated 120 mm of Rockwool Lamella, achieving a 0.35W/m2K U-value, and was finished in a stippled Silcoplast (silicone based) white topcoat. The use of the mineral wool insulant negated the requirement for movement joints. To assist in the waste management, all waste insulation was bagged to avoid contamination and returned to the manufacturer for recycling; together with the delivery pallets. The system designer was Rockwool Ltd; the installer ECL Contracts Ltd – both INCA members.
