Refurbishment: Social Housing: Low Rise
Runner-up: The Port Way, Bristol

For the Port Way, Shirehampton, Bristol, Bristol City Council chose an insulated render system to bring the thermal efficiency and aesthetics of these BISF houses into line with current Building Regulations, and the new Decent Homes Standard, as well as to give the properties a more traditional appearance. The system was also chosen for its noise reduction properties as the houses lie close to a busy motorway.

The existing cladding was removed and replaced with 18 mm exterior grade plywood to create a suitable substrate. The PermaRock insulated render system, fully accredited for application onto timber and steel framed buildings, included 60 mm of mineral fibre insulation. Dry dash and brick effect render, together with new windows, canopies, downpipes and gutters, provided the traditional look. The system designer was PermaRock Products Ltd; and the installer ECL Contracts Ltd - both INCA members.
